Two storefronts face each other across one parking lot at Stevenson Ranch Plaza. The Starbucks at 25164 The Old Road closed in late September. Outback Steakhouse, in the 26200 block of the same plaza, was expected to serve its last meal on Sunday, Oct. 25, KHTS reported. That Outback opened on Tuesday, March 4, 1997. It was the 10th Outback in the Los Angeles area, and the night before it opened it held a special event that raised $5,000 for the SCV Boys & Girls Club.
If you've driven The Old Road lately, you've seen this already. The causes are harder to see. Several of the losses on this corridor this fall came alongside cutbacks across the whole chain. The one announced replacement won't open for about a year. Until then, the corridor runs on the businesses that stayed and the one new opening on Pico Canyon Road.
The corridor's calendar, June 2026 to Fall 2027
Here's the order things happened in, counting the permits that set up what comes next.
| Date | What happened | Where |
|---|---|---|
| June 22, 2026 | Construction permit filed for a Raising Cane's drive-thru | Former Red Lobster, The Old Road |
| July 17, 2026 | Walmart celebrates its finished remodel | 25450 The Old Road |
| Aug. 7, 2026 | San Fernando Coffee Company grand opening | 24921 Pico Canyon Road |
| Sept. 8, 2026 | Demolition permit filed for the Red Lobster building | 27500 block, The Old Road |
| Sept. 12, 2026 | Ananto Sushi's announced final day | Valencia Marketplace, 25700 block |
| Sept. 20, 2026 | Red Lobster closes | 27500 block, The Old Road |
| Late September | Starbucks closes | 25164 The Old Road |
| Oct. 25, 2026 | Outback's expected final day | Stevenson Ranch Plaza, 26200 block |
| Dec. 8, 2026, 2 p.m. | LA Fitness closes for good | 24945 Pico Canyon Road |
| Fall 2027 | Raising Cane's projected opening | Former Red Lobster site |
Five closures fall inside roughly ten weeks, from Ananto's Sept. 12 final day to LA Fitness's Dec. 8 closing. The opening column is much shorter.
Chain-wide cutbacks sit behind several of the closures
KHTS's reporting gives chain-wide context for three of the five closures. The Starbucks closed as part of the chain's plan to shut 250 North American stores it called "underperforming." Red Lobster closed after its property lease wasn't renewed, and the chain has also been shrinking nationwide. LA Fitness gave no specific reason for its closure. Still, KHTS noted that parent company Fitness International LLC has confirmed multiple LA Fitness closures across the U.S. in 2025 and 2026 as it shifts toward its upscale Club Studio brand.
That matters if you're wondering what the empty storefronts say about the corridor. Starbucks named a chain-wide plan. Red Lobster and LA Fitness each closed their stores here while also cutting locations nationally, though KHTS cites a lease that wasn't renewed for Red Lobster and no specific reason for LA Fitness. KHTS gave no reason for Outback or Ananto Sushi. And while those leases were ending, Walmart was investing in the same road. The Stevenson Ranch Walmart at 25450 The Old Road marked a major remodel on July 17, with more parking, a renovated pharmacy and expanded pickup and delivery options, SCVNews reported.
The empty spaces are real, though, and some will stay empty for a while. Here's where that leaves your weekly routine.
The coffee stop moved up Pico Canyon Road
For anyone whose morning started at the plaza Starbucks, the nearest new option opened about seven weeks before that store went dark. San Fernando Coffee Company held its Stevenson Ranch grand opening at 24921 Pico Canyon Road on Aug. 7, with food and drink specials, live music and family activities, according to the SCVNews announcement. The company's website describes a coffee-and-brunch menu with handhelds and burritos, iced drinks, crepes and waffles, which is more food than a grab-and-go coffee counter usually carries.
Look at the addresses. The coffee shop is at 24921 Pico Canyon Road, LA Fitness is at 24945, and Ralphs is at 24975. Those three addresses on one block cover a workout, a coffee and a grocery run. After Dec. 8, two of those three stops will still be there.
Dec. 8 is six weeks away for LA Fitness members
The Stevenson Ranch LA Fitness closes on Tuesday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m., according to a notice posted on the club's window. As KHTS reported it, members were told they have these options:
- Transfer to one of the two LA Fitness clubs still operating in Santa Clarita. One is in Valencia on Newhall Ranch Road, and the company's club page lists it at 28211 Newhall Ranch Road. The other is on Golden Valley Road.
- Cancel the membership without penalty.
- If Stevenson Ranch is your home club, your access expands to every LA Fitness location in the country, Signature clubs included.
Your own membership terms decide how a transfer or cancellation applies to you, so check with the club directly before Dec. 8.
The one replacement on the calendar is a year out
KHTS has reported one incoming tenant on this corridor, and its timeline shows how slowly a vacant restaurant site turns over. A construction permit for a Raising Cane's drive-thru, with an attached patio, was filed with Los Angeles County on June 22, 2026. That was three months before Red Lobster closed. On Sept. 8, a demolition permit followed for the roughly 8,173-square-foot building and its landscaping. A Raising Cane's representative told KHTS the restaurant is projected to open in Fall 2027. KHTS calls it the Valencia Red Lobster site. It sits in the 27500 block of the same Old Road that runs past Stevenson Ranch Plaza.
From the first permit filing to the projected opening is more than a year, and that's the one site with a named tenant. KHTS's Oct. 12 roundup named no replacement for the former Outback, Starbucks or Ananto Sushi spaces. Valencia Marketplace's online directory does show The Boil Daddy as "Coming Soon" at 25708 The Old Road, next door to Ananto's old address at 25712. The listing has no date, and nothing ties it to Ananto's space.
So for the dinner-out part of the week, the Fall 2027 date is the only fixed one, and the Raising Cane's site will be a construction zone for much of the year before then.
How the week looks on the west side of the 5 now
Put together, the corridor still has these fixed points:
- Groceries and errands: Ralphs at 24975 Pico Canyon Road, plus the remodeled Walmart at 25450 The Old Road with its expanded pickup and delivery.
- Coffee and brunch: San Fernando Coffee Company at 24921 Pico Canyon Road.
- The gym: the Pico Canyon club until 2 p.m. on Dec. 8, then the Newhall Ranch Road or Golden Valley Road clubs for anyone staying with LA Fitness.
For the trail, brunch and omakase stops along the same road, our Old Road weekend guide still has the full sequence. If your errands take you across the freeway, our look at what's actually open at Valencia Town Center tracks a similar gap between announced and open. For more on the neighborhood, visit our Stevenson Ranch page.
We follow The Old Road the way you do, one storefront at a time. When the next tenant for the Outback or Starbucks space is announced, Armando & Valerie will cover it here.
